Obstructive Sleep Apnea and TMD Referral Providers

In-Network With Kaiser Medical Insurance

Dr. Grace Carlson values strong partnerships with referring providers who want evidence-based solutions for patients with sleep related breathing disorders and TMJ issues. Our role is to help medical colleagues by providing airway evaluation, oral appliance therapy and coordinated care that aligns with established sleep medicine guidelines.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that affects millions of adults and is associated with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction and neurocognitive decline.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls oral appliance therapy an effective treatment option for patients with mild to moderate OSA and for those intolerant of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). Peer reviewed research supports its safety and long term effects.

Referral Process & Collaborative Care

We follow AASM-aligned protocols and collaborate directly with board-certified sleep physicians to ensure appropriate diagnosis and medical oversight. When referring patients:

  • We complete a comprehensive airway and TMJ evaluation
  • Coordinate or review sleep testing (home or in-lab sleep center)
  • When referring a patient to a sleep specialist, a copy of the patient’s Diagnostic Sleep Study and a prescription is required
  • To schedule a sleep study, a referral from a physician and sometimes insurance authorization is needed
  • Provide custom, titratable oral appliance therapy when indicated
  • Monitor treatment efficacy and communicate progress

Optimizing Patient Care Through Personalized Evaluation

Dr. Grace Carlson works closely with referring healthcare professionals to ensure adult patients with snoring and sleep apnea receive personalized care tailored to their needs.

Before initiating oral devices or customized appliances, we review the patient’s medical history, symptoms, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and brain activity to determine the most appropriate intervention.

Our evaluations also consider physical factors that may contribute to obstructed breathing, such as blocked airway, muscle tone, and jaw positioning, including jaw forward adjustments. Providers can expect detailed additional information regarding patient teeth structure, leg movements, and different types of sleep-disordered breathing, along with suggested exercises or procedures to support therapy.

By collaborating on each case, we aim to identify the best treatment and provide clear guidance on what to expect during therapy. This approach maximizes relief from snoring, insomnia, and other OSA-related symptoms, helping patients tolerate CPAP alternatives and achieve optimal outcomes.

The use of customized appliances ensures patients benefit from personalized care, while ongoing monitoring allows us to track progress and provide benefit updates to referring healthcare professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Treating Sleep Apnea

Do you require a formal diagnosis before treatment?

Yes. A sleep medicine specialist (doctor) must provide a formal diagnosis of OSA before starting treatment. Dentists specializing in sleep medicine provide oral appliance therapy after diagnosis, evaluating the mouth and jaw structure to determine suitability.

Will you provide follow-up data?

Yes. We share progress updates and post-titration testing results with referring providers, ensuring you receive information about your patient’s treatment progress. This collaborative approach helps optimize patient care.

Do you treat central sleep apnea?

No. Central sleep apnea is assessed by neurologists and managed under medical care. For complex or mixed cases, we use a collaborative approach with other healthcare providers.
